About The Old Virgilians Association (Inc.)

About Us

More than 15 000 students have attended St Virgil’s College in Hobart, Tasmania, since it opened in 1911.

On September 25 1916 a gathering of 40 old boys, the College football team, the sports master, Br Moore and the team coach, Mr J Dunn met to discuss the formation of an Old Boys’ Association and an Old Boys’ Football Club. It was agreed that the old boys would subscribe towards an honor board for the College in memory of the former students who were engaged in the present war in Europe.

On May 20 1917, former students met and formed the Old Virgilians Association (OVA) to:

  • promote fellowship and support its members
  • establish and maintain a scholarship fund
  • acknowledge the achievements of former students and staff of the College
  • support the ideals of St Virgil’s College

"St Virgil’s Old Boys Association was formed on May 20th 1917 and was first known as St Virgil’s Collegians Association. The Committee consisted of eleven old scholars who were elected by a representative meeting of the former pupils of the College.

From the very outset the members displayed that spirit of loyalty and co-operation which is essentially indicative of the sons of St Virgil’s, and by sheer grit and determination began to achieve the object of their unanimous ambition. In its first year the Association claimed seventy members in Hobart alone, it has extended its way as far as Launceston and whilst it may proclaim members even so far distant as the Victorian capital.

The Committee is now on the point of opening for the benefit of the members an up-to-date suite of club rooms comprising billiard and bagatelle rooms, a gymnasium and reading room. Such results as these but six months after inauguration are gratifying and augur well for the future of the Association.”
